A supermoto places completely different demands on the suspension than an enduro. While an enduro chassis is designed to softly iron out deep potholes, roots, and stones on loose ground, asphalt demands extremely high stability and maximum feedback.
Main advantages of the Öhlins supermoto suspension compared to an enduro suspension:
-
No diving when braking: The stiffer spring rate and adjusted compression damping prevent the front from suddenly compressing when braking hard before corners. The rear remains stable and the motorcycle does not swerve.
-
Razor-sharp steering precision: The shortened suspension travel significantly lowers the motorcycle’s center of gravity. This allows the machine to be leaned with minimal effort and stubbornly holds the chosen line even at high lean angles.
-
Maximum traction & feedback: You get millimeter-precise feedback from the asphalt. You feel exactly when the tire starts to slip – a spongy enduro suspension would simply swallow this transition area.
-
Higher cornering speed without pumping: A soft enduro shock absorber tends to sag and pump when accelerating out of a corner. The Öhlins shock absorber keeps the rear of the vehicle up and transfers power directly to the asphalt.
-
Better landing control on asphalt: When jumping on supermoto tracks (off-road section with subsequent asphalt jump), the progressively adjusted damping absorbs hard landings without the chassis bottoming out or dangerously rebounding.
