Motocross tires for sand, mud and hard ground

On loose sand, widely spaced lugs work best. They dig in instead of sliding over the surface. As the track dries and hardens during the day, the requirement reverses. Then, a denser lug arrangement provides more contact area.

Wet clay is the special case that many underestimate. Because the tread clogs up there, self-cleaning counts more than the pure lug height. Open block spacing helps exactly with that.

If you're rebuilding your bike, combine the tires directly with Motocross Complete Wheels. Rim, spokes and rubber then fit together from the start. For minicross and small machines, choose sizes 70/100-10 or 80/100-12.

More traction at the corner exit thanks to the right lug profile

Traction never comes from lug height alone. How much grip you get out of a corner depends on the interplay of rubber compound, block spacing, and carcass. The softer the compound, the better it interlocks with loose ground. However, on stony hardpack, it wears out significantly faster.

You probably underestimate tire pressure, yet it's the most affordable lever of all. In motocross, typical values are between 0.8 and 1.0 bar. A few tenths less noticeably increase the contact patch, but at the cost of reserve against pinch flats on the rim flange. Therefore, check the pressure before every training session.

To prevent the tire from wandering on the rim at low pressure, suitable Tire Holder Motocross into the wheel. If they are missing, the valve will tear off in the worst case. For powerful machines, two holders per rear wheel are not an exaggeration.

Front and rear tuned in the motocross tire set

Front wheel and rear wheel have completely different tasks. The front tire guides the machine and reports what the ground is doing. At the back, it's all about propulsion. With every braking maneuver, the rear wheel also contributes a large part of the deceleration.

Therefore, a coordinated set is more worthwhile than a cheap individual decision. If a soft front tread meets a hard all-rounder at the rear, the front wheel will push beyond the ideal line in a bermed corner. Choose between 18-inch and 19-inch motocross tires for the rear wheel

The wheel size is dictated by your chassis, not your taste. Current motocross bikes have 19 inches at the rear. Motocross tires 18 inches, on the other hand, are mainly found on enduro machines and older models, because the higher cross-section absorbs impacts better on rooty terrain.

Because 120 dimensions are wider, they put noticeably more rubber on the ground. They suit powerful machines and deep sand, but also create more rolling resistance. If in doubt, use the dimension recommended by the manufacturer for your model. When ordering, remember the rim size, as motocross tires only fit the designated dimension.
